KATHERINE HEUESTON

1 JUNE 2024

Venue: Colyford Memorial Hall

Time: 10 – 4 pm

FREE refreshments all day, free parking. Please bring your own lunch

Cost 43 – Deposit 10

The Workshop will be an Introduction to Life drawing. There will be a live model all day.

We will start the day with ‘gesture’ drawings which last from 3 minutes to 30 seconds. The objective is to capture the main implied action, to loosen up,to convey movement, and to concentrate the mind. We will be covering a number of techniques using various mediums.

We will then move onto a Proportional study, where the basic rules of measurement will be demonstrated, followed by students having the opportunity to draw the human figure, with on going tuition

We will finish the session with a ‘Lifting Out’ technique in which the students will be working with charcoal and an eraser. This reverses the usual drawing procedure, in which the darkest tones are built up gradually, here you work from dark to light, picking out the highlights with an eraser. This method encourages an unfussy approach.

Max places is 12.

A 10 deposit secures a place, or you can pay in full, by BACs to Seaton and District Art Society (sort code 30-90-37, account no 24080668). Please use your name and Julie D as a reference followed by a confirming email to the treasurer (Robert Oldfield – details can be found on your membership card). JULIE DUNSTER

AN EN PLEIN AIR APPROACH TO PAINTING FROM LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHS USING OIL OR ACRYLICS

Venue: Colyford Memorial Hall

Time: 10 – 4 pm

FREE refreshments all day, free parking. Please bring your own lunch

Cost 42 – deposit 10

Following Julie’s demonstration on Monday 2nd September she will be holding a workshop on Saturday 14th.

When painting from photographs the results can often be stiff and characterless. In this one day workshop Julie will be showing us how to create a more spontaneous feeling of painting ‘en plein air’. The workshop is mainly directed towards oil painting but people are welcome to work in acrylics if they don’t require support in paint handling.

In the morning participants will undertake a number of exercises to consolidate the ideas around the topic. After this you will paint from your photographs. Julie will provide you with support to create believable depth and atmosphere into your landscapes, using composition, linear and atmospheric perspective principles.

You will need to bring landscape photographs that have a sense of depth to them. It would be very helpful if you could also bring a greyscale versions of the same views. Julie’s attached photograph of sheep is a good example of what is required.

list of materials (oil or acrylics)

You will need one or two good quality 40x30cm or 30 x24cm primed boards eg. Belle Arti. If using cheaper boards please make sure that they are coated with a non-absorbent gesso. In addition you will need turps or an odourless mineral spirits and an oil painting medium or solvent free gel. Julie will be using scarlet lake, yellow lake, ultramarine, white and transparent oxide red plus warmer and cooler versions of the three primary colours.

Stainless steel turps container or jar with secure screw top lid containing odourless mineral spirits.
40/60 linseed oil and oms mix or oil painting medium in screw top jar, or solvent free gel

Oil paint options
These are what I use. You dont have to go and buy more paint if you dont have these – aim to have traditional primaries in (red, yellow and blue) plus white, and then another primary of each which appears comparatively warmer/cooler in relationsee example below. Personally I like Michael Harding or Jacksons Artists oil paint.

Traditional or water mixable as follows:
Reduced palette: Michael Harding Scarlet Lake, Yellow Lake, Ultramarine Blue, White and Transparent Oxide Red (great for those with less colour mixing experience) And/Or Split Primary Palette: (for those with more colour mixing experience) Cadmium Red, Permanent Magenta/Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Lemon ( or yellow lake), Cadmium Yellow pale, Yellow Ochre, Cobalt blue or Pthalo + White, Ultramarine Blue, Transparent Red Oxide, Raw Umber, Titanium White. I also regularly use kings blue light on my palette.

People are welcome to work in acrylics if they don’t need support on paint
handling.

Please bring your own sketches based on the theme of nature (plant, animal or bird). Images (10×15 cm) need to be easily separated into white areas, a light colour and a darker colour.
