Seaton and District Art Society

(President: Alan Cotton: SWAc, FRSA, D.Litt)

Seaton & District Art Society is very pleased to welcome new members of all abilities and we hope you will find us friendly. Members do not have to attend meetings or exhibit their work but, of course, we hope they will.

The society was formed more than thirty five years ago and has around 120 members. Currently all our meetings are held in the Methodist Church Hall, Valley View, Seaton, on Mondays from 2 – 4pm.

We meet for a demonstration, illustrated talk or assessment of our work by a professional artist ten times a year, usually on the first Monday of the month. Your programme has the details. (The cost of the demonstrations is paid from the membership fee and profits from the annual exhibition.) A small library or art books and videos is available for hire at the monthly meetings. Books are loaned free for a month; there is a fee for videos.

In August, we have our Annual Exhibition in Seaton Town Hall. We encourage all members to exhibit – and sell – their work. The 15% commission from the sales helps us to keep our annual subscription low (currently £15, juniors £7) and the standard of our demonstrators high. The society has a group insurance policy covering members’ work while it is on display at the exhibition (conditions apply). Our only requirement of members is that, whether they exhibit or not, they help with at least two sessions of stewarding at the exhibition.

From September through to June/July on all the Mondays when we don’t have a demonstrator, members are eligible to attend the Monday Club, which gives the opportunity to paint or draw together, in the supportive company of fellow artists. A model is engaged for these sessions and members may also work on a still life or bring their own work-in-progress. At the end of each afternoon members may join in an informal assessment if they wish. To cover expenses the Monday Club currently costs £3 per session. Our experienced teacher members also run courses for us in oils, watercolour, drawing, etc.

Occasional workshops, painting days and visits to galleries or exhibitions are arranged on an ad hoc basis – details are announced at meetings or in the newsletter.

A newsletter is produced three times a year to keep the members up to date with planned activities and decisions of the committee. We ask members to let the secretary or a committee member know if they have news items for inclusion.

A few retail outlets offer members a discount on productions of our membership card 2011.
